In September 2024, BLAQ DIAMONDS Women Empowerment hosted the first-ever Nywaigi Women’s Gathering on Nywaigi Country in North Queensland. This transformative gathering was designed to reconnect First Nations women with culture, community and self — through a powerful three-day experience of healing, learning, and cultural pride.
Event Highlights
Led by Melisa Drummond-Anderson, a proud Nywaigi woman and Founder of BDWE, the gathering created space for women to reconnect with their roots while addressing the impact of social, emotional, and cultural disconnection. Through traditional practices, intergenerational storytelling, and mental health-focused activities, the event helped women strengthen their sense of identity and belonging.
The gathering included:
– Yarning Circles focused on healing and resilience
– Cultural reconnection storytelling and sistahood
– Women’s wellbeing sessions on Country
– Intergenerational sharing between Elders and younger women
– Mental health education and suicide prevention awareness
It was a sacred time for reflection, renewal and collective empowerment.

Why It Matters
Many First Nations women face isolation, disconnection and intergenerational trauma. Events like the Nywaigi Women’s Gathering create culturally safe spaces to address these challenges through community-led, holistic approaches. This is more than a retreat — it’s a return to self, to culture and to a vision of collective wellbeing.
What’s Next?
– Planning is underway for the 2026 Nywaigi Women’s Gathering with expanded workshops and participation.
– BDWE will continue offering culturally led programs that prioritise mental, emotional, and cultural healing for First Nations women.
– Expressions of interest are now open for future cultural healing and leadership events on Country.
