Why It Matters

Indigenous Peoples have a deep connection to their lands and seascapes, often serving as stewards of these environments for generations. With 80% of the Earth's remaining biodiversity located on Indigenous territories, Indigenous Peoples serve as custodians of our most vital ecosystems, playing a crucial role in safeguarding biodiversity for generations to come.

Additionally, Indigenous Peoples are at the forefront of climate change, drawing upon millennia of wisdom to develop mitigation and sustainability strategies that are vital for the preservation of our planet. By prioritizing Indigenous-led initiatives and partnerships within this working group, IFIP honors and respects this connection, ensuring that decisions about funding and resource allocation to Indigenous land preservation are made by those with the most intimate knowledge of the ecosystems involved.

What we are doing

A drastically changing ecosystem overlapped by severe underfunding has resulted in Indigenous communities facing a harsh threat to their livelihoods. IFIP has created the Territories Working Group to address the funding gap through direct partnerships among funders, stakeholders, and Indigenous Peoples across the world. This initiative is dedicated to advancing funding practices grounded in Indigenous values and respect for Indigenous Peoples' cosmovision, serving as a vital platform for protecting land and seascape ecosystems.

Building on IFIP's and its partners' collective expertise, the Territories Working Group aims to develop transformative funding practices tailored to support Indigenous-led initiatives focused on climate change, food systems, environmental protection, land and marine stewardship, and sustainable self-determined development.
