Why It Matters

Indigenous Peoples, constituting 6.2% of the world's population, continue to grapple with severe underrepresentation and underfunding across philanthropy. Despite concerted efforts to promote diversity and equity, Indigenous communities remain marginalized within the philanthropic ecosystem. This inequity is illustrated in the fact that Indigenous Peoples only receive 5% of global human rights funding. In response to this urgent need for systemic change, the Global Alliance of Indigenous-Led Funds emerges as a timely and imperative initiative. As Indigenous Peoples assert their rights and lead the way in crafting holistic solutions, the philanthropic community must heed their calls for justice and solidarity, ensuring greater recognition and support for Indigenous-led initiatives worldwide.

Our Work

The Global Alliance of Indigenous Led Funds is a pivotal initiative launched by IFIP following the Third Global Gathering of Indigenous-led Funds in February 2023. Building upon the foundations laid during the Second Global Gathering in Canada in 2019, discussions centered on the need to evolve the Indigenous Led Funds working group into a collaborative, learning, and advocacy space. Recognizing the diverse landscape of Indigenous-led funds and their pivotal role in reshaping philanthropy, the Alliance was born. Led by two Co-Chairs and supported by IFIP as the secretariat, the Alliance is dedicated to amplifying the voices of Indigenous communities, promoting transparency, and empowering local solutions. This milestone marks a significant step forward in supporting Indigenous Peoples' self-determination and driving a profound shift in funding paradigms worldwide.
